Browser War I Tim Berners-Lee, a British physicist at the European Particle Physics Laboratory, built the first prototype of a browser in the early 1990s. It was text-only and the software was freely available on the Internet, but not easily understood by or accessible to the average user. Only scientists and researchers used it widely... The Mozilla Project On February 23rd 1998, Netscape launched the Mozilla.org and under it, released the programming source code for its Communicator software to the open source community. Initially, the objective was to develop a good browser quickly. But progress was slow and it took Mozilla 32 months to come up with a commercial browser, Phoenix 0.1 in September 2002... Security Holes in IE In the last week of June 2004, Internet security experts discovered a breach in IE that allowed a virus to record users' keystrokes at any of 50 banking sites (Barclays Bank, Citibank, Deutsche Bank etc.) and relay that data to a Russian site. This virus was hidden in files that were illegally put up on those hacked banking sites... |
